He was born in 1926 to William and Bessie LaPlant in Grand Rapids, MN. String attended the Wendigo School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. String was united in marriage to Eunice Sampson on February 18, 1950 in Hibbing, MN. They moved to their present home on Pokegama Lake. He was employed with the Grand Rapids school district for 36 years as a custodian, holding a chief boiler engineer license.
He was a member of the Hill City Baptist Church as an ordained Deacon. Music was a large part of String’s life and he was a member of the music groups, “Over the Hill Gang” and “Country Legends”. He also enjoyed playing music with many other area groups and musicians and loved recording music with his daughter, Linda.
He also loved to hunt, fish and “horse trade” – especially bartering and playing music with his brother, Lloyd, and family.
Preceding him in death were his parents; son, Gerald; brothers, Henry, Eddie, Charlie, James “Roy”, and Robert; sisters, Lillian Surface and Doris Erickson.
String is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eunice; five children, James LaPlant, Pamela (Patrick) Selmser, Linda (Ken) Bruce, Sue (Robert) Pinette, and Gary (Tammie) LaPlant; sister, Alice Bishop; two brothers, Lloyd (Beverly) LaPlant and Roland (Norma) LaPlant; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Burial in Itasca-Calvary Cemetery.
