MARION Bobbie Kerr Beans, age 84, of Marion, Ala., died May 26, 2013, at her home. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Berean Baptist Church in Marion with Reverend Dwight Woods officiating. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery with Rollins Funeral Home in Marion directing. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hillyard Jefferson Beans Jr.; her son, Jon Wendell Beans; her sister, Shelia Hudson; her brother, Frank Stanley Kerr; and her parents, Frank and Mattie Kerr.

She is survived by her brothers, Ben O. Kerr and James T. Kerr. Mrs. Beans is also survived by her sons, Hillyard J. Beans III and Michael Kerr Beans (Wendy); daughter-in-law, Sagusta Wright Beans; and her grandchildren, Gabrielle Aryana Beans, Kaitlyn Hillary Beans, Michael Edward Hillyard Beans, and Jonathan Kristopher Beans.

Born in Electric Mills, Mississippi, Mrs. Beans grew up in Northport, Alabama and later lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She graduated from Alabama A&M University where she received a degree in Vocational Home Economics and was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.

Mrs. Beans taught for 40 years in Greene County, Perry County and Marion City Schools. Mrs. Beans also was the supervisor and teacher of the Adult Education Program of Perry County.

Mrs. Beans served in numerous professional and civic organizations. She was a board member of the Marion Military Institute Board of Advisors, and board member of The Cahaba Mental Health Retardation Center. Her other professional affiliations include Perry County and Alabama Retired Teachers Association, Lincolnite Association, Alabama Vocational Education Retired Teachers Association, Ladies Progressive Club (past President), Ladies Social Club, Alabama Board, of Pensions and Security, a board member of the Berean Head Start Board, and Crossties.

Mrs. Beans was a well respected member of her local community. She was a pillar of strength to those who knew her. Mrs. Beans adored her grandchildren which were a source of pride to her.

Mrs. Beans touched the lives of so many and influenced a generation to become productive citizens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hillyard J. Beans Jr. Scholarship Fund c/o Berean Baptist Church, 804 Washington Street, Marion, AL 36756.
