John A Kurtz, Shannondale post office, Redbank, a general merchant and postmaster of Shannondale, Pa., was born in Edenburg*, Clarion County, in 1856, and was a son of J. M. Kurtz, who was born in Germany, and Sarah (Hare) Kurtz, who was born in Allegheny County in 1827. Sarah died on July 24, 1886, at Salem. They had a family of eight children, six of whom are now living - Stewart A., Clara, John A., Theresa (Wretha), Leroy, and Cirue Kurtz. J. M. Kurtz in early life was a tailor, but soon became a merchant at Edenburg. *name later changed to Knox because there was another Edenburg, Pa.
Appointed to Postmaster in Knox, 28 Aug 1853. Again 28 Aug 1855 until 26 Apr 1858.
Appointed to Postmaster in Lamartine, 1 Feb 1886 until 11 Apr 1889.
Will lists gifts to children - S A (Stewart Alva) Kurtz, Mrs. D S (Clara) King, Cirrue Kurtz, Leroy Kurtz, J A (John A) Kurtz and (Wretha) Maude Berlin (wife of F W Berlin).
