Fred Jansma was born near Sibley, Iowa to Frank and Dena(Kolkman) Jansma June 30, 1918. Fred grew up on the family farm north of Sibley and attended country school. After receiving his education he found employment as a hired hand for area farmers. On July 26, 1940 he was united in marriage to Klassina Faber at her parents home near Worthington. In 1942 Fred and Klassina settled on a farm near Worthington where they began farming and raised their family. Fred farmed for 18 years until 1960 when he moved his family to Sibley where he owned a milk hauling route. He later was employed as a bulk truck driver, hauling milk for Kenneth Harms, the Kellen Bros. and Robert Dreessen. Before retiring Fred worked as a meat cutter at the Red Owl store in Sibley for over ten years. Over the years Fred enjoyed each job and liked visiting and getting to know his customers.
Fred favored fishing when they were biting, and had fond memories of a weeklong family vacation spent on a houseboat on Rainey Lake in Canada. He children remember Fred as being a strict father, but with a wonderful sense of humor, and Fred cherished the time spent with his grandchildren. He and Klassina looked forward to their annual trip to the Spencer Fair and rarely missed having dinner at Perkins on Friday nights. Much of Fred's spare time throughout his life was spent on woodworking projects or tinkering with something in need of repair. He constructed wonderful items that he sold or gave to family or friends, often using only a photograph for plans. His years of figuring out how to take things apart and put them back together made repairing equipment, motors or tools second nature to Fred.
This last Wednesday morning at the age of 81, Fred died unexpectedly after suffering a heart attack at his home.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Klassina Jansma of Sibley, three sons; Dwayne (Sue) Jansma of Lakefield, MN, Clifford (Linda)Jansma of Harrisburg, SD and Elroy (Pat) Jansma of Sibley and his daughter Eunice (Larry) Tjoland of Little Rock, IA. Fred is also survived by his 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren along with three sisters; Nellie Zylstra of Worthington, MN., Henrietta Bosma of Ocheyedan, IA and Dorothy (Curt) Meyerhof of George, IA; two brothers: Ray (Hermina)Jansma of Lynden, WA and Dean (Emily) Jansma of State College, PA; a brother-in-law Ed Bonnes of Minneapolis, MN and numerous nieces and nephews.
