Robert L. Sandburg, 88, of Muscatine, passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at the Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Interment will be in Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. Following the interment a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Community Room. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in Robert’s name.
Robert Leroy Sandburg was born on January 6, 1927 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Frank and Anna (England) Sandburg. On July 17, 1949, Robert was united in marriage to Barbara Swigert in Galesburg. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois and was employed as an electrical engineer at Stanley Consultants. He enjoyed playing duplicate bridge and poker with the guys, golfing, fishing, stamp collecting, flower and vegetable gardening and playing softball.
Robert will be deeply missed by his wife, Barbara of West Liberty; children, Linda (Larry) Fuhlman of West Liberty, Gary (Sara) Sandburg of Ft. Madison, Judy (Tom) Phelps of Quincy, IL, Janet (Dale) Cauthen of Boiling Springs, SC and Donna (Doug) Helgeson of Olathe, KS; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Louise Anderson of Galva, IL.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; brothers George and Frank Sandburg; and sisters, Alice Brown and Florence Sprinkle.
