Her father, Joseph Walker O'Daniel (1767–1809), was allegedly murdered in the Cumberland Gap on the way from Maryland to Kentucky:
". . . Joseph set out for Kentucky with his wife, three sons, and five daughters . . . . When almost through this break in the mountains [Cumberland Gap], Joseph O'Daniel, Sr., returned to a blacksmith shop, which they had passed only a short distance, in order to have something made. He told his family to continue their way, for he would soon overtake them. As he did not return as soon as they expected, they decided to wait for him. Two days or more went by. His son Joseph and a colored man were then sent in search of him. To their horror they learned that he had been seized and taken into the mountains by highwaymen, who then slew him and made away with the money he had on his person and the fine horse he rode . . . . Stunned but undaunted, by the loss of her husband, Mrs. O'Daniel continued her way with the rest of the family."
