Survivors include his common-law wife, Sylvia Castellanos of Sinton, Texas; two sons, Matthew Joel De La Garza and John Joseph De La Garza of Corpus Christi, Texas; one daughter, Merissa Jo De La Garza of Corpus Christi, Texas; his father, Manuel De La Garza of Sinton, Texas; eight sisters, Stella Contreras, Rosa Ueckert, Diana De Leon and Mary Ann De La Garza of Sinton, Texas, Odilia Chavez of Harlingen, Texas, Sylvia Luckey of Corpus Christi, Texas, Ninfa Ortiz of Conroe, Texas, and Norma Zapata of Dallas, Texas.
A rosary was recited May 21, 2006, at the Ritchea-Gonzales Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated May 22, 2006 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Sinton with Father David Taurasi as celebrant. Interment followed in the Eternal Rest Cemetery, Sinton, TX.
