Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Big Springs Baptist church, rural Alcester. The Rev. Daryl Runion officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery under direction of the Wass Funeral Home in Alcester.
Mr. Johnson was born Jan. 26, 1901, in Union county, S.D., son of Joseph and Eva (Anderson) Johnson. He attended Garland country before moving with family to Long Beach, Calif., where he attended school one year. He then returned to the Garland area and began farming with his father.
On Dec. 11, 1921, he married Mae Johnson in Big Springs. The couple farmed in the Big Springs area until 1946, when they moved to Balboa Beach, Calif. In they returned to the Big Springs area where they operated the Big Springs store until 1964.
Mrs. Johnson died in December 1969. On Oct. 29, 1977, he married Mary Harrington, at Garryowen, Catholic church.
Mr. Johnson was a member of Big Springs Baptist church since where he served as treasurer, deacon, trustee, and head usher for many years. He served as president of Big Springs Cemetery Association. He was one of the last surviving members of the Springs Band.
He was an agent for Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance and was a Pride Seed corn dealer. He was an ASCS committeeman, Sioux Valley township board member and a member of the Beresford Gun club.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Joanne Newberg of Sioux City; a stepson, Gene Harrington of Vermillion; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and. nine step-grandchildren; and 15 step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.
