Son of Henry and Eliza M. (Rott) Woodruff.

Maternal grandfather: Joel Rott, of New Haven, Connecticut.

At age 14, learned the trade of carriage maker in New Haven, Massachusetts.

Moved to Quincy, Illinois in 1842. Worked as carriage maker then as provost during the civil war. Appointed provost marshal of the fourth congressional district by Abraham Lincoln, in 1863. Shortly after, founded a paper mill with Frederick Boyd.

Married twice: First, to Miss Mary Dalzell, 1846 in Davenport Iowa. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dalzell. She died in 1879. They had five children.

Second, married Miss Anna Huntington October 5, 1882. She was a daughter of Owen and Eunice Huntington, of Derby, Connecticut. She survived to be the widow of James Woodruff. They had no children.

FUNERAL OF JAMES WOODRUFF.

The funeral of the late James Woodruff was held yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the residence, Ninth and Broadway, conducted by Dr. C. W. Pearson.

Mrs. David Schontz and Miss Lillian Turner sang, and the pall-bearers were: M. K. Weems, C. H. Williamson, Dr. Reuben Woods, Paul Uhlman, Lyman McCarl, and Proctor Taylor.

The house was filled with friends of the deceased, whose remains were laid away in Woodland cemetery.
