Joseph born February 18, 1822 married Elizabeth Braley in June 19, 1852. They had four children, Emma Sisson, Irvin, Lillie Jane, Mary Elizabeth. Joseph served in the navy during the civil war aboard the USS Tyler. The Tyler's main function during the Civil War was to defend the Yazoo River. Drag the river for torpedoes. (We would call them mines today) One of the many battles that Joseph and the Tyler were in was the battle of Helena, Arkansas this was the same day that Vicksburg surrendered. Joseph wrote many letters home while serving aboard the Tyler. These letters told of the harsh conditions aboard the ship. They also told of his deep love for his wife and family. He was a religious man and spoke of his faith in his letters.
In October 1895, at the age of 65 they traveled by wagon train from Indiana to Fitzgerald, Georgia. On this trip was wife Elizabeth, son Irvin, daughter Mary, and Irvin's Daughters Ella, Lotta, & Marcia. Marcia died here in Fitzgerald. Joseph died here too on September 19, 1897
