John Harkness married Catharine Fetterly (1802-1885) on 4 Oct. 1823 in Williamsburg Township, Dundas County, Upper Canada (Ontario). Marriage Bonds 1803-1834 . Bondsmen: Joseph Johnston, Minister, of Osnabruck, and Philip Fetterly of Williamsburg, yeoman, and they settled on Lot 20, Third Concession, Matilda Township in 1826. Catharine was the daughter of Peter Fetterly U.E. Loyalist, and Hannah Baseler (1760-1840).

John Harkness, son of Adam Harkness and Elizabeth Dunbar, died in Matilda Township, Dundas County, Canada West (Ontario), and is buried in the Harkness Family Cemetery, Concession 3, Lot 19, Matilda Township.

John's siblings also buried in the Harkness Cemetery as follows:

- Robert Harkness died 1 May 1862 at age 81.
- Maria Harkness died 20 Jan. 1870 at age 86.
