I am creating this memorial for my 3rd Great-Grandfather Abraham Crowell, who otherwise may never have one. My research has uncovered that Abraham was buried on his family farm, and the headstone which had been placed on his grave was destroyed and discarded by the Town of Villenova road crew. As of 1996 the farm was found to be owned by a Crowell descendant.

I will try to piece together the best I can the life of Abraham, although I'm sure some will dispute dates and names. I am open to all new information. I found that Abraham fathered ten children, so I'm certain there are many, many Crowell family members that connect to him. If you have researched this family in Chautauqua Co, you know that nearly every census has at least one Crowell (if not an entire page full of them) and well...it's a large family! So I'll do my best.

Abraham was born to James Crowell (sometimes found written as Captain James) and Rhoda Higgins, both of Barnstable County, Massachusetts. He was one of nine children, and the the third son born. There are conflicting facts on where his birth occurred, as one source states Saratoga Co, another Chenango Co, and even more confusing on one census is listed as being in Vermont.

The names of the children born to James & Rhoda Crowell are: David, James Jr, Abraham, Joseph and Solomon;
and four daughters: Sarah, Lurena, Rhoda and Phebe

It is believed that Abraham married Betsey Wheeler originally of Waitsfield, Vermont near the year of 1816. This year does seem to match documented census dates.

The first census I could locate Abraham on is that of 1820 and shows there are 4 persons living in the house in Hamilton, Madison County. Two children have been born and also to note Abraham is a farmer.

The second documented find is on the 1830 census and the only change is that there are now 8 people living in the household.

In 1840 we now find Abraham and family living in Villenova and there are 12 people living in the house. No one is individually enumerated by name, only by age and free/white persons. Of a curious note to me is that for the first time noted is 'No. White Persons over 20 Who Cannot Read and Write-1' I suspect that this is indeed Abraham (if not, Betsey).

In 1850 we finally see our first real look at the house by name. The family is still residing in Villenova, and Abraham is said to be now 57 (with a birth year of 1793) but born in Vermont (more likely Betsey's birth place). Also living in the house is Betsey age 51, Abraham Jr (Abram) age 24, Phebe (I'm not ever sure of the correct spelling of her name) age 13, and I Crowell age 10. I first suspected this to be Ira, but the age does not match as Ira is believed to be born in 1831 and would have been 19 at the time. I'm led to believe that this is a child that either died young, or that I was unable to trace as I could not locate any children born in 1840.

That is the last known document I could find relating to Abraham. I believe the death date for Abraham to be 1852. Betsey is found on the 1855 living with Abraham Jr who is then listed as the Head of Household.

The following are who I found in my research to be the children of Abraham & Betsey:

Lydia (Crowell) Heninger 1817-
Hiriam Crowell 1819-1900
Nelson Crowell 1821-1874
Mary Crowell 1824-
Abraham 'Abram' Crowell Jr 1826-1895
Lafayette Crowell 1828-1898
Ira Crowell 1831-1922
Lucy Crowell 1834-1913
Phebe (Crowell) Sartwell/Wood 1837-1912
Samantha (Crowell) Smith 1839-1914
