Chico Enterprise, Friday Evening, March 9, 1887, pg 1 col 8: The Only Survivor. George Nauls, an old veteran of the late war paid the Oroville Mercury a call Friday morning. Mr. Nauls is now 75 years of age and is this winter an inmate of the Butte County Infirmary. His home is at Chico, but of late he has gone to the infirmary for treatment. Mr. Nauls claims to be the only survivor of the famous California Hundred and enlisted at Placerville in 1861 and served throughout the war. He was twice wounded, once in the head and once in the right leg. The latter wound, received at the battle of Fair Oak, still troubles the veteran. He came to California in 1849, and after serving through the war, returned here. He has now an application in for a pension and he is certainly entitled to one.
