Biography of Robert Stewart (1750-1837)
Research by Bruce Maddox Stewart, Robert's 3rd great grandson, and Bruce's daughter Joan Stewart Smith

Robert Stewart was born in 1750 in Foss, Perthshire, Scotland, the son of Alexander Stewart and Christian Stewart. His mother's maiden name was the same as her married name, per her marriage record, and the baptismal records of Robert and his siblings, John, Elspet, Isobel, Christian, Margaret, Jean and Joseph, in the parish of Dull register. Robert's baptism is recorded in the parish of Dull register on March 15, 1750. His origins from Foss and the parish of Dull were passed down in my branch of the family.

Robert married Jane (Jean) Wilson on January 18, 1778, in Fortingall, Perth, Scotland, with banns also recorded in the groom's nearby parish of Dull. Robert, Jane and their four oldest children (eight to come) immigrated to the United States in 1786. He purchased a farm in Johnstown, Montgomery County (now Fulton County), New York.

He died on July 23, 1837, in Johnstown, having lived a long life of 87 years. His wife Jane, who died a few months after him on Oct. 12, 1837, and daughter Catherine, 2nd of his 12 children, were buried next to him in Colonial Cemetery. Robert was a farmer and active member of the Presbyterian Church of Johnstown.

According to Robert Stewart's will, Robert and Jane's 12 children were: Alexander, Catherine, John, James, Charles, Christian, Jane, Robert Jr., Joseph, Daniel, William and David. The Last Will and Testament of Robert Stewart can be found in the Records of the Surrogate Court, Montgomery County, Fonda, New York. Book #6, Pages 135-6. October 30, 1837.

Robert and Jane did not have a son named Frederick.

Robert obtained his farm within a year of arrival from Scotland in 1786. This land was Lot #58 of the western allotment of the Kingsborough patent. Upon his death in 1837, Robert left his land to his son William (1799-1888), after which William left the land to his son, William Dorn. It was sold to the Sammons family in 1871, who were still the owners in the early 2000s.

3G grandson of Robert and Jane (Wilson) Stewart

In 2001, Robert and Jane's 3G grandson Bruce Maddox Stewart and his wife Mary Kay (Bergin) spotted a rosebush full of white blooms while looking for the house foundation of the Stewart homestead, Sammonsville, New York, near Johnstown. Because "Jane's rose" was in full blossom near the front steps, he was able to find the location of the foundation of Robert and Jane's house, hidden under shrubs and small trees.

In 2000, 4 years after Robert's 3G grandson Bruce M. Stewart took photos in 1996, "the headstones on Robert Stewart's site had become almost unreadable. Had we not recorded them in 1996, we would not have been able to decipher the letters."
