Sept. 22, 1924 - June 3, 2013
Rose Hughes died peacefully at her daughter's home in La Tuna Canyon, CA., on June 3, 2013, surrounded by her children. She was loved by all who knew her. Born in Hollywood, where she lived for 87 years, Rose went to Blessed Sacrament Grammar School and Bishop Conaty Catholic Girls High School. After graduation, Rose was a secretary at the Biltmore Hotel and in 1942 became one of Capitol Records' first employees. During WW II, she was a hostess at The Hollywood Canteen. In 1946, she married her childhood sweetheart Herbert Hughes (who predeceased her) and they had four children, all of whom are living and veterans of the entertainment industry: Sean, Maureen, Kevin (Dody Dorn) and Kathleen (Ed Dazzo). With all of her children in school, Rose continued her working career: ten years at Kragen/Smothers/Fritz and a decade as executive assistant to Time Magazine's bureau chief in Beverly Hills. She traveled to Europe, enjoyed summers at Newport Beach, loved jazz, classical music, dance, movies and working in her garden at the home she designed in Nichols Canyon. Rose has one brother, Charles "Duke" Russell (Shirley), two grandsons, David Gershwin and Cooper Dazzo, five nieces and nephews and many grand-nieces and -nephews.
A requiem mass will be celebrated for Rose at 10 a.m., June 11, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Hollywood. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Catholic Relief Services (crs.org). Callanan & Woods-Scovern 818.242.0258
