"BLACK" WEEKEND - KILLED BY TRACTOR
Southland Times, Issue 19961, 30 August 1926, Page 7

The second fatality is also reported from Mossburn, where Herbert Richard Beer, aged 44, was run over by a tractor. Deceased was engaged in shifting a tractor, which had been converted into the caterpiller type with an implement attached, from one field to another. No person witnessed the occurrence, but the assumption is that he got out to open a gate, and instead of taking his seat on the tractor again he stood on the footboard, and in changing the gears accidentally slipped the gear into "reverse" instead of "forward," being thrown off, the caterpiller wheel passing over his head. The position of the tractor after the occurrence verifies this theory, as the tractor was backed up against the implement. Beer was found in the evening, and on medical attention being sought life was pronounced extinct. Deceased was the youngest son of the late George Beer, the proprietor of the Mossburn Hotel.
