Alvin Janke, 73, Spearfish, died Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at the Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital.

Alvin was born in Logan County near Gackle, ND on June 26, 1932 to Jacob and Christina (Lippert) Janke. He attended school near Fredonia and Lehr, ND. He was on the family farm with his parents until November 8, 1951, when he was drafted into the US Army during the Korean War. Sent over seas Alvin served on the front line near Pork Chop Hill and Heart Break Ridge. He was honorably discharged in November 1953. He worked on various farms and in the road construction business. His job took him to the Grand Forks and the Arvilla, ND area where he met the love of his life Arlys Ness. They were married on Arlys parent's anniversary, October 14, at the Ness Lutheran Church at Mecinock, ND. They lived in the Arvilla and Emerado areas until moving to Lead, SD in 1956. Alvin worked at the Homestake Mine for 32 years, mining for 17 and as foreman for 15, retiring in 1988.

Alvin was a member of the VFW since 1960, proud to have served his country. He loved to dance, tell jokes and visit with the old miners, pheasant hunt, snowmobiling and was a proud owner of a trike motorcycle.

His great love was his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Alvin was diagnosed with lung cancer on Dec. 9, 1999 and with throat cancer in 2003.

After living in Lead-Deadwood-Central City area Alvin and Arlys moved to Spearfish.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Arlys (Ness) Janke, Spearfish, SD four children, Donna Coons, Deadwood, Harold Janke, Rapid City, Elaine (Neal) Reller, Pollock, SD, and Allen (Wendy) Janke, deadwood, two brothers, Clifford (Jean) Janke, Lehr, ND, Ervin (Alice) Janke, Bismarck, ND, three sisters, Laura Lautt, Wishek, ND, Agnus (Eldon) Dallman, Lehr, ND, and Shirley (Jim) Brandner, Bismarck, ND, 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jolene Daiker, his parents, and three brothers, Leroy and two infant brothers.

Funeral services December 23, 2005 at the Lead-Deadwood Funeral Chapel in Lead with Rev. Tom Stenzel and Rev. Steve Agan officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Deadwood.
