Melvin Bruce Hewitt, age 87, peacefully passed away at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, North Carolina surrounded by his family on December 14, 2015, following a brief illness. He was born June 3, 1927 in Maiden, North Carolina to Clifton and Colleen Hewitt. He had two younger brothers Gerald and Dale and two sisters Theresa and Virginia. Bruce attended public school in Maiden and Wingate College. After college, he worked for Klopman Mills then Burlington Industries for 35 years before retiring to Vale, NC where he pursued his passion for collecting and restoring Corvairs. Bruce was married to Irene Jennette Leatherman. Together they raised three children: Rebecca Rudisill Raines, Amy Jeanette Caulder and Joseph Bruce Hewitt. He is survived by his daughter Rebecca, his son Joe, their spouses, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Bruce was proud of his service in the National Guard and was a long standing member of the Republican party. He was an active member in the National and North Carolina chapters of CORSA. He served as an officer at the local level, however his real gift to the Corvair community was his love of helping other people with their cars. He was always there to discuss how to do a project or help with finding parts. The Hewitt family will receive friends Friday, December 18, 2015 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at Goodin-Drum Funeral Home in Maiden, North Carolina. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 18, 2015 at 1:00 pm in the chapel of Goodin-Drum Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Grace Lutheran Church, Hickory-Lincolnton Highway, Newton, North Carolina. The family gratefully declines flowers and would ask that memorials be made to St. Gerard House (A Sanctuary for Families Dealing with Autism) 620 Oakland St. Hendersonville, NC 28791. This is in honor of Bruce's great-grandson Luke Long. The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation for the competent and compassionate care that Bruce received from the Emergency Room staff and the ICU team at Frye Regional Medical Center.
