Gerald Neal Hewitt, 78, of Black Mountain, NC, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday October 24, 2009 at the John F. Keaver Hospice Solace. Dr. Hewitt was born in Maiden, NC on October 21, 1931 to A.C. and Ella Colleen Tuttle Hewitt. Dr. Hewitt was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force stationed in Japan and serving in the Korean War. He graduated from Wake Forest College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity, Appalachian State University with a Master of Arts, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Doctorate of Education. He was a Hospital Administrator and retired from NC Baptist Hospital as the Vice President of Patient Financial Services after 30 years of service. Dr. Hewitt was a community leader and minister, pastoring five churches full time and numerous churches as the Interim Pastor. Dr. Hewitt was chairman of the NC Baptist State Convention Department of Aging. He was very active in the Healthcare Financial Management Association, receiving numerous awards for his work. He served on the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School Board for eight years, two years as the Vice Chairman. He also served as President of the Mustang Club of Parkland Senior High School. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters Mayna Theresa Hewitt Bier and Virginia H. Sigmon. Dr. Hewitt is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Phyllis Beattie Hewitt of Black Mountain; two sons Timothy N. Hewitt (Teresa) of Mobile, AL and Scott B. Hewitt of Decatur, GA; a daughter Angela H. Andersen (William) of Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren, Jonathan Hewitt of Lafayette, LA, Nathan Hewitt of Baton Rouge, LA, and April Wallace of Tuscaloosa, AL; and two brothers M. Bruce Hewitt of Vale, NC and Dale C. Hewitt of Greensboro, NC. The Funeral Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at South Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Sewell, Dr. Ray W. Benfield, and Rev. Sam Hickerson officiating. Entombment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. Military rites will be performed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Guard.
