Harold Paape, 89, Ashwaubenon, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004 at his home.

He was born on Aug. 17, 1915 in Green Bay to the late George and Rosa (Seiler) Paape, Sr.. He graduated from West High School in 1933 and entered the Naval Reserves. He later became active duty in the U.S. Navy, 34th Division during World War II from 1941 to 1945. Upon returning, he attended Milwaukee School of Engineering. On Aug. 27, 1947, he married the former Elaine Namz at Zion United Methodist Church in Denmark. Harold was storekeeper for a business he founded in 1946, Harold's Fountain and Gift on Velp Ave. He built one of the first neighborhood shopping centers north of Milwaukee, Marquette Shopping Center, in 1955. He also owned and operated Ben Franklin in the Marquette Shopping Center before going into real estate in the 1970s, operating Paape Realty. Later, Harold owned and managed several rental properties, including a professional office building that he built on Oneida St. and Mason St. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church. Harold was a loving husband and wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Elaine; one daughter and son-in-law: Jeanne and John Costabile, Racine; one son and daughter-in-law: Gary and Dianne Paape, Corvallis, OR; five grandchildren: Elizabeth (Ethan) Hoff, Racine, Joseph (Jacqueline) Costabile, Gurnee, IL, Katherine Costabile, Racine, Jane Costabile, Racine, and Sasha Paape, Corvallis, OR; two great grandchildren: Alex Hoff and Mina Costabile; one brother and two sisters-in-law: Walter and Mae Paape, and Mrs. Frank (Frances) Paape, all of Green Bay; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by two sisters, Myrtle (John) Wetts and infant Marie Paape; and eight brothers: Willis (Mildred), Clarence (Marcella), Melvin (Florence), George, Jr. (Helen), Winfred (Clara), Frank, and infants Elmer and Clarence Paape.

Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Lyndahl Funeral Home, Lombardi Ave. at Ridge. Rd. Visitation will continue after 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church, 901 Shawano Ave., where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Robert W. Christman officiating. Interment will take place in East Cooperstown Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Drs. Thomas Saphner and Jaswinder Sundlass and the staff of Unity Hospice for the special care and compassion that was given. A memorial fund has been established for St. James Lutheran Church.
