George Durant was the second son of Rev. Josiah Durant, the rector of Hagley in Worcestershire. Following his education at St. Edmund's Hall, Oxford, he briefly worked as a clerk before being sent with the Army to a post in Havana, Cuba.

Following his return to England, he bought the entire village of Tong from the Duke of Kingston and began rebuilding Tong Castle. He married Maria Beaufoy and the couple had a son and a daughter. He also served as an MP for Evesham.

It is rumoured that Durant had many affairs, many illegitimate children, and that his wealth was acquired through the "sacking of Havana" and the slave trade, although the particulars are scarce. What is indisputable is that the existing 16th century castle he had partially demolished was a graceful Tudor style that he tried to marry with an abominable gothic style, resulting in a graceless and unpleasing structure that was costly to maintain. It was eventually torn down and today, the M54 runs directly through where it once stood.
