Naomi Gilbert Berrick, "Nana"

Naomi Berrick, aka Nana, age 90, passed away on December 19 at her home in Brewster, MA. She loved music, nature, cats and dogs, children, everything British, her Jewish heritage, tea chocolates, and rum raisin ice cream. She was always happiest when surrounded by her family.

Born and raised in London, Nana was a plane spotter and telephone operator as a teenager during World War II. Her house was destroyed in an air raid and she was almost killed. Music was a passion in her family and she sang popular songs in a small stage band. She sang daily up until her last days. In London she met Len, a GI from Brooklyn stationed in London, who would become her future husband and father of her five children. Married in the U.S. at age 21, they lived in Brooklyn, Elmont, and Deer Park, New York where they raised their growing family. In 1987 they retired to Brewster, on Cape Cod. After Len died, Nana worked as a bus monitor for special needs students in the 1990's and helped start the thrift shop at the Brewster Senior Center. She also volunteered at the ABC Nursery School.

In her 80's she was joined in Brewster and cared for by her daughter Kim (husband Jeffrey). Soon, youngest grandchildren Abigail and Hannah came along who were a source of joy and entertainment up to the end of her life.

Nana was predeceased by her parents Henry George Gilbert and Mary Rosenthal Gilbert, and her sisters Bertha, Doris, and Stella, all of London. She was also predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Leonard Berrick, who passed away in 1989. She is survived by sons Howard (Barbara), of Wilmington, DE; Stephan (Cindy Fox), of Brewster, MA; Robert (Celeste), of Ticonderoga, NY; and Michael (Loretta) of North Babylon, NY; and daughter Kimberly Tipton (Jeffrey), of Brewster, MA. She also leaves 12 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren (with another on the way). She will be missed.

A graveside service will be held at Brewster's Lower Road Cemetery, on Tuesday, December 22 at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Brewster Rescue Squad, 1657 Main Street, Brewster, MA 02631.
