George Midle Sr. was born on 5 Feb 1842, in Kaltenbrunn, Taus, Bohemia, Austria (Studanky, Vseruby, Domazlice, Czech Republic), to Mathias and Barbara (Hubl) Meidl. Kaltenbrunn (Studanky) is a present-day district within the town of Vseruby, where its presumed he grew up. George used his birth name of Meidl for several years until changing it to Midle late in life.

In about 1863, he married Barbara Wolf, probably in Kaltenbrunn. Shortly after his mother's death, in 1867, George and Barbara emigrated from Bohemia to the United States, with two of their children. They sailed from Bremen, Germany, to Baltimore, Maryland, where they arrived on 28 Jun 1867, aboard the vessel Victoria. From Baltimore they traveled to Mishicot, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where they probably met his brother, Blasius, and his family, who arrived in the United States six months earlier, on 31 Dec 1866. The couple settled in Mishicot where they raised their family.
