ltc 34th u.s. ct. He was born in Lee County, Ga. He attended Amherst College, where he kept an 8-week diary in 1856. He joined the Union Army, eventually becoming Lt. Colonel with the 34th Regiment of Colored Troops. He mustered out in 1866. In 1867 he was appointed register for Hillsborough County; in 1868 he was commissioned as county judge for Hillsborough County. From 1869-1875 he was chief clerk in the U.S. Surveyor General's office and for 1876-1878 Surveyor General for the State of Florida. He then moved to Springfield, NJ, where he started a dairy business, and died there 1879 January 24. Some descendants remained in the Tallahassee area and worked also for the state.
