Sidney was the daughter of Christopher Columbus WILLIAMS and Elizabeth McGINNIS. Sidney had an 8th grade education. She first married Joseph HALLAM, in about 1893. A daughter, Palma, was born to the marriage in 1894. In 1900 and 1910, Sidney was living with her husband and their daughter in Washington County, Pennsylvania. In 1910, Sidney was operating a hat shop, at 58 N. Main, in Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Her husband died in 1913. On April 5, 1914, Sidney was baptized at St. Stephens Church, in Sewickley, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Three days later she was confirmed. In 1920, Sidney and her daughter were living in Pittsburgh. Sidney's daughter Palma died in 1924. In 1930, Sidney was living in Youngstown, Ohio, working as an art teacher in a department store. In the early 1930s, Sidney began working as a housemother for young college men living in fraternity houses. In 1938, she left a fraternity house at the University of Pittsburgh and began as housemother for the Gamma Upsilon chapter of Delta Tau Delta at Miami University in Oxford, Butler County, Ohio. She was introduced at a formal tea with 150 guests, among them the university president and deans of the various schools. By 1940, she was back in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, working as housemother at a fraternity in Pittsburgh. Some time after 1942, Sidney married a widowed optician, Dr. Lee Verne HERPS (1878-1961).
