He first served in the National Guard and then joined the U.S. Army, serving his country in Germany.
He married the former Greta L. Patterson on Jan. 22, 1949 in Skowhegan. She died on Nov. 18, 2013.
He started out working at Norrwock Shoe Co. in Skowhegan for several years. He then started the Herbert Hayden Trucking Co. in 1959, hauling milk from the farmers to the processors until 1986. In 1986 he hauled wood for his son Donald Hayden until retiring in 1996.
He is a member of the V.F.W. post in Athens. He is a member to the Church of the Open Bible in Athens.He liked to go fishing, he enjoyed going camping, woodworking, and he was a good card player.
He is survived by four children; Donald Hayden and his wife, Elaine, of Harmony, Donna Adams and her husband, James, of Skowhegan, Dennis Hayden and his wife, Patricia, of South China, Doreen Commerford and her husband, Robert, of Pennsylvania; 11 grandchildren; Stephanie, Rachel, Travis, Amy, Michael, Jennifer, Aaron, Timothy, Rebecca, Amanda, and Zachary; 18 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Durwood Hayden and his wife Marjorie, of Hartland, Douglas Hayden of Solon, Wayne Hayden and his wife, Greta of Solon, two sisters, Chloe Collins and her husband, Garold, of Cornville, Corrine Richardson and her husband, Norman, of Clinton; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Bernard, Alfred, Millard, and Wilder Hayden, one sister, Doris Hayden.
Interment will be later in the spring at Mt. Rest Cemetery in Athens. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. (Central Maine Newspapers 1/2/2016)
