"Christ"/Christian was born Krystian Krettmann in Wyszogród, Poland, a small town in central Poland on the Vistula River. In 1898, he married Marie Fierebach in Wyszogród; he was age 22, she was 23. They had six children before he made the decision to come to America nine years later.

Shortly after Krystian arrived in Baltimore, MD on 7 June 1907 aboard the SS Darmstadt from Bremen; he shortened his surname by dropping one "t" & one "n" -- his birth name of Krystian Krettmann became Krystian Kretman… & ultimately Christian Kretman.

Once he was settled at Saint Paul, MN, "Christ" made a trip back to Poland in 1909 to begin making arrangement for his wife, Marie, & six children to come to America. He returned to Saint Paul and they ultimately followed him in September 1912; also arriving in Baltimore.
