Wilhelmina"Meta" Mandelkow was born the daughter of Max Henry and Margaretha Schlepkohl(Kohl) near Minden,Iowa on March 18,1888. She had a twin brother named John Ferdinand and some of their other sibling were Otto, Herman, Henry and Emma. They lived with the family in the Minden area until mother Margaretha died in 1896. When Meta was about nine years of age, the family moved to Clarks, Nebraska where Max married Maggie Juhl who was a widow with 6 children. Eventually Wilhelmina returned to Iowa and married Gus Mandelkow on September 25, 1913. They made their home in Avoca, Iowa and were blessed with 3 sons: Lawrence, Walter and Elmer. Meta Mandelkow died in a Council Bluffs hospital Friday, January 10 and her funeral was held at the Blust Berthusen funeral home in Avoca Sunday, January 12 with the Rev. Joseph Gerit in charge of the service.
