In 1890 he received an Army Invalid Pension for his service in the Civil War, and following his death in 1921 his wife Jane received an Army Widows Pension.
In the 1910 census of Centerville, Bourbon Co. KY. John is listed as 64 born in 1846 in KY residing with his wife Jane age 63 and their children Pattie 22, John H. 19 and 5 grandchildren all born in Kentucky.
When he died on Feb 3, 1921 he was buried at the African Cemetery (Cedar Heights Cemetery) Paris, IL., and on July 19, 1938 a government headstone was shipped to Paris, KY to mark his grave as a veteran.
