Mava was born Oct. 8, 1917 in DeWitt, the daughter of Montie Groves and Myra (Kellogg) Groves. She married John Herbst on June 10, 1944 in DeWitt.
Survivors include son, Darrel Herbst (Judy); daughter, Barbara Rusk; son, Robert Herbst (Terri); and seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mava was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John; her mother and father; brothers, Charles Groves and Darrel Groves and grandson, Kenneth Herbst.
Mrs. Herbst graduated from Clinton High School and Illinois Commercial College in Champaign. She was employed as a secretary at Mumford Hall in the Animal Science Department and in the Department of Ceramic Engineering.
Her hobbies included quilting, sewing, crafts, traveling to all 50 states, especially Hawaii, and touring Europe. She was an active member of three bridge clubs and the Mahomet golf league.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church at DeWitt, Virden, Chatham and Mahomet. She was church secretary at Mahomet for 10 years.
Mava belonged to the Eastern Star, University of Illinois Home Extension, 9-hole Golf Association, bowling leagues at the Satellite Bowl and United Methodist Women.
