Obit, Philadelphia Inquirer April 7 1895, Dr. John W. Coles, End of a life the great part of which was given to his country - Dr John W. Coles, 57 years old, a well known physician and retired navy surgeon, died yesterday morning at his residence, 2114 Pine St. Mr. Coles was a native of New Jersey. He was appointed in 1863 acting assistant sureon in the navy and assigned to the steamship North Carolina. He received prompt promotion, serving as assistant surgeon at numerous ports. On January 14, 1867 he was promoted to past assistant surgeon and did special service on the Minnesota until he was transferred in 1868 to the Naval Hospital in this city. In 1873 he received a surgeon's commission, and in 1875 was assigned to the naval hospital at Yokohama, Japan. Returning to this county in 1878 he was detailed on the Medical Examining Board and the National Board of Health at Washington. His last service was at the local naval hospital and as a member of the Medical Examining Board. On February 6, 1885 he was retired. The funeral will take place Tuesday from Christ Church chapel.
