Ralph "Marvin" DeBar was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. He married Margaret Bowlin on June 7, 1941, in Rockport, Missouri, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1991. He was an Assistant Manager of Freight Car Fleet Control for the Union Pacific Railroad, before retiring in 1983. He was an Elder in the RLDS Church, and was a pastor of the Riverside Congregation. Marvin was a World War II veteran, and member of the Masonic Order Cobia Lodge. He and his wife Margaret were recognized in 1984 and 1988 as the "Outstanding Volunteer Couple of the Year" by the Council Bluffs Volunteer Bureau.
