SOUTH BEND - Alta Baker, 83, of South Bend, IN, passed away on January 31, 2016, in South Bend.

Mrs. Baker was born October 13, 1932, in Hamlet, IN, to Carl and Iva Huhnke. She graduated from Hamlet High School. After graduation, she worked for Allis Chalmers in LaPorte, IN, where she met her husband, Waldo Baker. She also worked for almost twenty years as a cook for Kmart Restaurant, and won numerous ribbons for her baking and gardening from the LaPorte County Fair.

Wife, mother, grandmother, and wonderful cook and baker, she spent her retirement time gardening, traveling, and going fishing with her husband.

As a wife and lifelong partner, she leaves behind her husband of 61 years, Waldo Baker. They were longtime residents of LaPorte, IN, where they were members of St. John's Lutheran Church. She is survived by three children, Donna (Mike) Miles-Robison, Janet (Bryan) Truex, and Steven Baker; five grandchildren, Josh Miles, Zach Miles, Charles Baker, Banan Truex, and Alexandria Truex; sister, Hazel Poulsen; and several nieces, nephews, and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Merle Huhnke, Warren Huhnke, and Clarence Huhnke.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 6, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. (Eastern Time) in Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz Lake. Burial will follow at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Walkerton. Friends may visit on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Harbor Light Hospice, 1608 E.
