Widow of Packer Dies
Mrs. Hortense Newcomer Swift, widow of Edward F. Swift, former chairman of the board of the Swift Packing company, died yesterday morning in her home at 1550 North State parkway. Mrs. Swift had suffered from a heart ailment since September.
At her bedside were her three children, T. Philip Swift, Edward F. Swift Jr., and Mrs. Huntington B. [Annie May] Henry. Mrs. Swift also leaves five grandchildren. They are Hortense Henry Kelly, Annie May Swift, Edward F. Swift III., Philip Hoyt Swift and Elizabeth A. Swift.
Funeral services for Mrs. Swift will be held at the home tomorrow at 2:30 p. m. Only members of the family and close friends will be present. The Rev. T. M. Pender, pastor of St. James Methodist Episcopal church, will officiate. Interment will be at Rosehill cemetery.
For many years Mrs. Swift was a leader in charitable and cultural enterprises of the city. Her greatest interest was centered in the Chicago Lying-In hospital and Convalescent Home for Crippled Children at Princess' Crossing, near Wheaton, Ill.
Mrs. Swift was born in Forreston, Ill., on June 25, 1865. She was married on March 28, 1888 to Edward F. Swift, second son of Gustavus Franklin Swift, who made packing history in Chicago. Her husband died May 28, 1932, in an accidental fall from a window of their eighth floor apartment. He left an estate estimated at more than $8,000,000.
Mrs. Swift also was and active supporter of the Chicago Civic Opera company, and numerous other artistic and cultural enterprises.
