Mayor of Evanston, Illinois 1899-1901. Withdrew from the 1901 race because he found the contest "too personal."

When he was 18 in 1862 he enlisted in the 68th Illinois Infantry. Later transferred to 70th Illinois Infantry. Enlistment records show him as 5' 10", light hair and blue eyes.
