The baby of four, Ona's older siblings were Gerald Fox, Robert Cox, and Nettie May Cox.
The family lived in Smithville, El Paso and Dallas before moving back to Houston, where her grandparents had a small farm at what is now Studewood and 20th in the Houston Heights. She graduated from the old Sam Houston High School and learned to drive "anything with wheels" at the docks during the war effort. After the war, she worked at her family's boarding house on Clinton Drive at the Port Houston, where the ships docked with returning veterans looking for work and housing. One of those ships was carrying her future husband, H.D. Mize, an Army veteran from Corpus Christi. They married and raised three children, Mark, James, and Rebecca and their grandson Zachary in Denver Harbor, where they were long-time supporters of Ludtke Memorial Methodist Church on Zoe St. She worked at Mustang Tractor in finance and shipping.
She loved unconditionally, lived for a visit or call from her family and friends, and was very active in the raising of her grandchildren.
A memorial marker was placed in the family cradle with her Cox grandparents and beloved "Aunt Nettie and Uncle Mike" Koplan. Sunset Lawn Section of Hollywood Cemetery, Houston.
We love and miss you, Grandma! Your grandkids, Stacey, Zachary, Michelle, Christopher and Nicolette.
