James was born in Houston, to H.D. Mize of Corpus Christi and Ona Elizabeth Cox of Smithville. He was raised in Denver Harbor, close to his Cox grandparents and many cousins. He attended Pugh Elementary, McReynolds Middle, Austin and Wheatley High Schools. He was active in Boy Scouts with Uncle Ralph Rivera.

As a young man, he moved to be near the Kauahquo Family in Kiowa Co. Oklahoma, who called him Hotekome. He met his wife of over 20 years, Claudia, at Ponca Powwow. They bought a house next door to his parents in Houston, where they raised their two children, Michelle and Christopher.

He was out-going, loving, empathetic, and solved problems with ingenuity and creativity. By trade, he was a welder and prop-maker in the film industry for over 40 years in Houston, Austin and Los Angeles, as a member of IATSE Local 44 - North Hollywood. "Necessity is the father of invention."

At 66, he passed away from prostate cancer with his (amazing) wife of over 10 years, Virginia, by his side at their home in San Fernando Valley, CA. A memorial marker was placed near his mother's in the Cox Family cradle, Sunset Lawn Section of the Historic Hollywood Cemetery, Houston.

We love you, Dad!!! Uncle to Stacey, Zachary and Nicolette. "Paw Paw Jimbo" to Juliet, Mae and Eleanor.
