William was born in Poland but moved to Berlin, Germany, with his family in 1930. They returned to Poland shortly before the start of World War II and in 1940 fled Europe via Italy, Morocco, Spain and Portugal . They arrived in New York in January 1941. Three-and-a-half years later, William was stabbed to death by thieves he caught robbing his father's Manhattan clothing store. He died a week before his 21st birthday.
