"Bert" died of cancer at his Fullerton, CA home surrounded by his family. He was 86 years old. Elbert Duran was born in 1920 in Santa Ana-Orange, California, the son of Lucy Guerrero and Antonio Duran. He had one child with Josefina Helen Delgado. He served in World War II from 1941 to 1945, where he was wounded and honored with a Purple Heart. He married Helen Delgado in 1943 with whom he had five children: Phyllis Estrella, Gloria Govea, Ruben Duran, Lucy Valenzuela and David Duran.
Following the war, he became a master watchmaker, opening "Elbert's Watch Repair" on Lemon Street. He later opened a jewelry store with his daughter, Phyllis, at the Orangefair Mall in Fullerton. In 1978, he and his daughter created El Pachuco Zoot Suits.
Survivors include five children, 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 2002.

Upper center section of plaque has two oval-shaped color pictures of a man and a woman. Right upper corner of plaque has a grey engraving of a purple heart military award. Text inscriptions for each decedent are separated by an engraving of a cross with a set of rosary beads hanging from the crossbar and one rose on each side of the cross. The entire plaque has a border engraving of roses and vines.
