Following the war, he became a master watchmaker, opening "Elbert's Watch Repair" on Lemon Street. He later opened a jewelry store with his daughter, Phyllis, at the Orangefair Mall in Fullerton. In 1978, he and his daughter created El Pachuco Zoot Suits.
Survivors include five children, 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 2002.
