Exie B. (Marshall) Barnes Ashburn, age 75, departed this life on Good Friday, April 6, 2012 at Stein Hospice in Sandusky, Ohio.

Exie was born in Grenada, Mississippi, April 26, 1936.

Her family came to the Sandusky, Ohio area after WWII to seek jobs in the automotive industry, as did many as a part of the 1940's great migration. Her people had been sharecroppers and Exie knew there had to be a better way. When she realized that teachers did not pick cotton, Exie decided to become a teacher.

She received her Bachelor of Science and Masters in Education from Bowling Green State University, and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, Columbus.
Exie was a faithful member of United A.M.E. Church, Xenia, Ohio where she served as a trustee, founder and chair of the Clothes Ministry, member of the Ladies Aide and Helping Hands Ministries and was the Former 1st Lady of The Second Baptist Church, Sandusky, Ohio.

Exie served several communities in the following ways: Currently Chairperson of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Great Lakes Region Resolution Committee, Former President Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Charter president of Iota Phi Omega in Lorain, Ohio; Eastern Star; first woman to be accepted into membership in the Xenia Chapter of Kiwanis; Phi Delta Kappa; Charter Member Duel Citizenship Committee; Professor & Director of student teaching, Central State University, Wilberforce, Ohio; Adjunct Professor, The Ohio State University, Columbus; Professor & Program Director, The College of Wooster, (Ohio); Adjunct Professor, Wilmington College (Ohio); Adjunct Professor, University of Dayton (Ohio); Adjunct Professor, Wittenberg University, Springfield; Assistant Superintendent, Xenia, Ohio; Special Consultant in Exceptional Children, The Ohio Department of Education, Columbus. Radio personality WCSU, Outstanding Faculty Member CSU; First black teacher in Perkins Township; Honored for leadership by Ohio House of Representatives, participated in the Sixth Leon H. Sullivan Summit in Nigeria, and received numerous other honors and awards.

An avid traveler, Exie lived in Windhoek, Namibia in South Africa for a year and a half as professor at Windhoek College of Education.

She was a participant/presenter at the Oxford Round Table at Oxford University, England. Exie journeyed to Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, Russia, Denmark, Mexico, St. Thomas, St. John, Barbados, St. Marten, Martinique, Poland, and England living out her favorite saying: "Only what we do for others will last."

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Quinford C. Barnes and The Rev. Richard R. Ashburn; Parents, Excell Cox and Nellie Weaver; brother, Willie Earl and grandmother, Ellen Eggleston.

She leaves behind to celebrate her life seven children: Richard R. Ashburn, Jacob Julian Ashburn (Pat), Jennifer Ann Ashburn, James Ronald Ashburn, Carolyn Henderson (Michael), Alea Chevonne Jones, Alfred Harold Ashburn. Grandchildren: Aaron Ashburn, Joseph Ashburn (Tiffany), JoAnna J. Ashburn, Ja'Ron David Ashburn, Austen Camron Reginald Jones, Loren Henderson (Daisy), Phillip Henderson, Breanna Ashburn and Niyah Ashburn. One great-granddaughter, Kierra Diane Ashburn one niece, Rachel Ashburn Mallory; nephew, Julian Samuel Ashburn; Great nephews and niece, Adam Christopher Mallory, Dustin and Jacoby Ashburn; Special Sister/ Cousins, Ella Mae Baker and Bernadine McDowell. A host of cousins, other relatives and several special friends; Mary Nelson, Marsha Bayless, Queen Kyles, Cleaster Johnson, Anna McGuire, Jane Littleton, Malikah Faquar and Sisters of the Rock.
