Martha is the daughter of James Whitaker (3rd son of John Whitaker and Martha Gough, born abt 1722 in Warwick County, VA, believed to have died in Fairfield County, SC, in April 1782) and the daughter of Catherine Wiggins, daughter of Captain John W. Wiggins and Catherine Bray Baker of Martin County, NC. Martha's father, James Whitaker, and her Uncle William Whitaker (1736-1789) and their families moved to the Kershaw District (Camden, SC) in 1772. They obtained land grants in the vicinity along with 1,200 acres near the Old Waxhaws. Martha married Captain James Cantey in 1785 in Fairfield District, SC. Her children are: John b 1786, Zachariah b 1787, Mary b 1790, Sarah Catherine b 1792, and James Willis b 1797. Martha moved with her husband and children in 1798 to Baldwin County, GA. They established a home on the Oconee River near where Town and Gum Creeks empty into the river in the southeastern part of Baldwin County (was Washington County). They lived near kinsman, Hudson Whitaker and Francis Boykin. Martha's sister, Catherine Whitaker, was married to Major Francis Boykin. Martha and Catherine are first cousins of Hudson Whitaker. She is buried on land that Captain James Cantey owned. There is no gravestone.
