Religious Figure, Social Activist. Entering the priesthood with the Society of Jesus in 1969, Cardenal served for many years in Medellín, Colombia before returning to Nicaragua to accept a university teaching position. A passionate advocate for education, he led Nicaragua’s National Crusade for Literacy in 1980, and served as Nicaragua’s Minister of Education from 1984 until 1990. Despite the strong opposition of the Catholic Church to Nicaragua’s Sandinista government, he was a strong supporter and as a result was suspended from the Society of Jesus in December 1984 and from the priesthood by Pope John Paul II in 1985. He was eventually reinstated into the Jesuits in 1997 after he renounced the Sandinista government. At the time of his death from complications after surgery, he served as the National Director of the Nicaraguan branch of the education organization Fe y Alegría. He is the brother of noted Nicaraguan poet, priest, and Minister of Culture Ernesto Cardenal.
