Brother Placid Hellmann, O.S.B., 79, of Aurora, Ill., died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, at Marmion Abbey, where he was a Benadictine monk.

He was a founding member of Marmion Abbey in 1947. He was assigned as a cook for the junior monks when he arrived at the abbey, and later was responsible for the abbey kitchen. He also was a barber to the community. In 1971 he moved to South Dakota and began work in several chaplain assignments. He was a Newman Chaplain at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. His last assignment was as a prison chaplain in Springfield, S.D. He returned to Marmion Abbey in 2001 because of health problems.

He is survived by two sisters, Dolores Hellmann of Madison and Betty "Liz" Levy of Louisville, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Aloysius and Marie Hellmann.

His body will be received by his monastic community at Marmion Abbey at 4 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. in the abbey church on Butterfield Road in Aurora. The Office of the Dead will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Monday from 8 a.m. until the funeral Mass at 9:15 a.m. in the abbey church. Burial will be in the abbey cemetery.

The Daijeiden Mortuary in Aurora, Ill., is in charge of arrangements.
