The ship sailed from New York's Brooklyn Harbor, Wednesday, February 4, 1846 to California.

The Ship Brooklyn sailed around South America to California. Samuel Brannan, an elder in New York City and vicinity who later ecame prominent in Califonria history, Conceived the idea of taking his folowers by water to California and there meeting the company who had left under Brigham Young, presumably for the same port. The death of Joseph Smith and the proposed Westward move of the majority of the Twelve and their followers found him in charge of the Church in New York, and publisher of the church paper, The Messenger.
The Brooklyn, a three hundred seventy ton ship, with Captain Richardson, Master, was chartered for the occasion. Into the hold, with amazing foresight, went the press of "The Messnger" (new paper), and two complete flour mills, dismantled but lacking nothing, and other supplies for colonizing in California, which was then on the road to nowhere, and completly out of the jurisdiction of the United States. After arriving in San Francisco July 29, 1846, and in the Spring there still was no colony from Nauvoo, Brannan and some of the saints set out to meet them, leaving Sutters Mill April 25th they crossed the mountains of California a distance of forty miles, with eleven hed of horses and mules, traveling on foot and driving the animals before them in the deep snow. On June 30, 1847 they metup with Utah "pioneers" on the Green River in what is now Wyoming and accompanied them to Salt Lake Valley. Brannan went back to San Francisco to gain his fortune, and met up with a detachement of the Mormon Battalion September 6, 1847. Those who could afford to went on to Utah the others stayed for the Gold Rush of January 24, 1848 at Sutters Mill.
Charles Barton Mowry was born on 6 Jul 1798 in Burrillville, Providence, Rhode Island. He died in May 1873 in San Francisco, San Francisco, California. He was sealed to his parents on 13 Oct 1960 by proxie in the Salt Lake Temple. He was baptized on 9 Jan 1968 by proxie. He was endowed on 15 Jun 1892. He married Ruth Walkup in March 1820 in, ,,Rhode Island. They were sealed by proxie on 13 Oct 1960.

He was a mason by trade, and a member of the San Francisco Town Council in 1848, The San Francisco Branch of the LDS Church met in a large room on the second floor of his house on the corner of Broadway and Powell Streets.
d. 4 Jun 1872.
