Carl was the oldest child of Amanda (Mattsson) and Carl Johan Andersson of the Kalle's farm of the village of Tjärna, Borlänge. He was a humorous lad who once tried to prove he could walk across the yard with his cap pulled down over his eyes. He ended up at the bottom of the well. Luckily he was not seriously hurt, and his father was able to get a ladder down the well and retrieve the boy. When Carl emerged, his main worry was his cap that was left down in the water. At 13 years of age, Carl's luck ran out, and he died of a ruptured appendix, deeply mourned by his grandparents, parents and seven siblings.
"Tell us, thou clear and heav'nly tongue:
Where are the babes but lately sprung?
Lie they the lily-banks among?"
- Robert Herrick
