Schuyler III was the son of Schuyler Colfax the Vice President from 1869 to 1873. He was born shortly after Colfax began his term in office. Schuyler III married Catherine Nelson and they lived in South Bend, Indiana where he was elected mayor in the early 1900's. Later Schuyler III and his family moved to Rochester New York where daughter Bettes married Harold Townson.

Schuyler Washington Colfax III, was born on April 11, 1870. He became the youngest ever Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, when at the age of 28 years he assumed the office from 1898 to 1902. Schuyler Colfax III was the 11th Mayor of South Bend, Indiana. Mayor Pete Buttigieg became the second youngest Mayor of South Bend on January 1, 2012 and went on to be appointed Secretary of Transportation in 2021.
