R. George Ashworth Died, Heuvelton Resident Was 83
Heuvelton - R. George Ashworth, 83, Heuvelton resident, died Sunday about 4:30 p.m. at his home here. Mr. Ashworth had been suffering from a heart ailment for some time, and had been ill for the past week. He was born in the town of DePeyster on May 14, 1874, the son of the late George and Martha Cooper Ashworth. He attended Ogdensburg Free Academy, Antwerp Seminary and the University of Chicago. On June 26, 1897, Mr. Ashworth married the former Miss Helen Chase of Barnard, Vt., in a ceremony at Woodstock, Vt., by the Rev. Julius Simmons, pastor of the Woodstock Universalist Church. Mr. Ashworth taught school at Barnard, and both Mr. and Mrs. Ashworth were teachers at the Fairfield Military Academy at Fairfield, N. Y., at the time of the Spanish American War. Mrs. Ashworth taught languages, while Mr. Ashworth taught military law. Mr. Ashworth spoke several foreign langages. [sic] In March, 1901, the couple moved to the Ashworth homestead in DePeyster, where Mr. Ashwrorth operated the farm until his retirement in 1932. They then moved to Heuvelton to their present home. Mr. Ashworth was justice of the peace in the town of DePeyster for many years, and was employed as bookkeeper for Dr. Walter Mulholland in Heuvelton for about 12 years. He was well known in Masonic circles, being a member and past master of DePeyster masonic lodge 573, a member of Ogdensburg Chapter 60, a member and past commander of Ogdensburg Commandery 54, Knights Templar; a member of Media Temple, Order of the Mystic Shrine, Watertown. Surviving Mr. Ashworth's death is his wife, two sons, Fred and Harold, both of DePeyster; six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. at the Fox Funeral Home, Heuvelton, with the Rev. Edwin Seaman, pastor of the Ogdensburg Wesleyan Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Heuvelton. Friends are asked to contribute to the heart fund in lieu of sending flowers.
