Artamus Cowan Abseck was born October 29, 1917 in Castle Gate, Utah and Died October 25, 2015 in Hurricane, Utah.

Artamus was born to James Howard Cowan and Myfanwy Evans Cowan and was the third child of the family’s seven children. She grew up in Somerset, Colorado where her father was employed by the Somerset Mine Company. Her family lived in Somerset, Colorado until she was in her Sophomore year of High School and then the family moved to Paonia, Colorado.

Her mother had always told her father that someday she was going to purchase a home that overlooked the valley of Paonia. She had saved enough money from her baking and washing clothing to put a down payment on this house and ranch. She recalls that when they were getting ready to move into this home, they had to wait until the electricity was hooked up. Prior to that, the lights in the house had been kerosene burning.

Artamus played Saxophone in the High School Band. She Graduated from Paonia High School in 1935. She then attended Brooks Business College in Denver and majored in Book Keeping.

Artamus married John Ralph Abseck on August 17, 1938 in Delta, Colorado. They moved to Los Angeles in early 1941 where John was employed with Baldwin Unloading Company (unloading Automobiles from Box Cars). Then he was hired by Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica. They lived in a duplex on west 42nd Place (which is two blocks south of the Los Angeles Coliseum and Exposition Park). While residing in Los Angeles a son, Robert John Abseck and daughter Linda Dianne Abseck were born. They purchased a home and moved to Long Beach, California in 1948 with their children, Robert and Linda. Artamus was a house wife and John continued to work for Baldwin Unloading Company until the late 1950s and Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica, and eventually transferred to the Long Beach Facility. In 1955, their third child Terry Sue Abseck was born in Long Beach.

Artamus was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and continued her activity throughout her life. She served in various Auxiliary positions, Primary Teacher & Counselor, Junior Sunday School Coordinator, Young Women President and Counselor, Relief Society Counselor.

After Linda and Terry were married we always had Sunday Dinner at her home. And she would also invite her friends Jack and Jennie Mae Taylor and their daughter Brenda to attend our family dinners. Her husband John Abseck died on September 3, 1998 in Long Beach, California. She continued to live in their home in Long Beach with her son, Bob. Her daughter, Linda Abseck (Nielsen) passed away January 7, 2008 of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). The death of Linda was a very traumatic loss for her. She always expected to outlive her children.

Artamus moved to Hurricane, Utah on 27 April 2015 with her son, Bob and lived in their new home until her death. She really missed her best friend, our next door neighbor, Lorriane Morris who had lived next to her for over 35 years. The day we left for Utah, I know Lorriane was very sad to see my mom leave. She would always look out for her and they would walk a mile each morning until my mom was no longer able to walk.

She is survived by her son, Robert Abseck, daughter Terry Sue Abseck (Kessler) 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren with another on the way.
