At the time of his death, Mr. Barker was in the ferry service of the Eric Company in command of one of their North river ferry boats. He had spent his life as a river boatman and had risen to the rank of engineer. He met his death by drowning while in the performance of his duty. He was a veteran of the Civil War, serving two years and receiving an honorable discharge.

Mr. Barker was a man held in esteem by all who knew him and was in every respect a good citizen. He was member of the Masonic order, the Royal Arcanum and the Methodist Episcopal Church.
