Educated in Halifax County Public Sshools,attended National Business College,Roanoke,Virginia and received the B.A.degree in 1940 from the College of William and Mary,in 1948 he received the LL.B degree from T.C.Williams School of Law of the University of Richmond.A member of Sigma Pi and Delta Theta Phi.
On February 28,1941,he married Mildred Graham Webb of LaCrosse,Virginia.
After he graduated from the College of William and Mary ,he was with the advertising department of the Richmond News Leader;a salesman for the Southern Biscuit Company;a buyer for the Hercules Power Company.
After law school he was a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Military Record
Commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy Reserve in 1942 and served as Communications Officer in the Armed Guard in the Atlantic and Pacific,discharged in 1946 as Lieutenant (S.G.)
Entered politics as a member of the Halifax School Board,elected in 1958 to the House of Delegates and served seven terms,moving to the Senate in 1972,where he stayed for twenty years.
